Saat penduduk Niniwe merendahkan diri di hadapan Allah, dan menangis memohon belas kasihan, DIA mendengar tangisan mereka. “Ketika Allah melihat perbuatan mereka itu, yakni bagaimana mereka berbalik dari tingkah lakunya yang jahat,
maka menyesallah Allah karena malapetaka yang telah dirancangkan-Nya terhadap mereka, dan Ia pun tidak jadi melakukannya.” {RH 18 Oktober 1906, par. 7}
Tetapi Yunus mengungkapkan bahwa DIA lebih menghargai jiwa-jiwa di kota yang malang itu daripada menghargai reputasinya. Dia takut kalau-kalau dia dianggap sebagai nabi palsu.
Belas kasihan yang diperlihatkan oleh Allah kepada orang-orang yang bertobat “sangat tidak menyenangkan Yunus, dan dia sangat marah.” {RH 18 Oktober 1906, par. 8}
As the people of Nineveh humbled themselves before God, and cried to him for mercy, he heard their cry. “And God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God repented of the evil that he had said that he would do unto them; and he did it not.” {RH October 18, 1906, par. 7}
But Jonah revealed that he valued the souls in that wretched city less than he valued his reputation. He feared lest he should be regarded as a false prophet. The compassion shown by God toward the repentant people “displeased Jonah exceedingly, and he was very angry.” {RH October 18, 1906, par. 8}
